Top Five Birds to Kill with One Stone

The last thing the internet needs is yet another travel blog. One more collection of “The Seven Best Things to do in South America”, or “10 must try Traditional Mexican Dishes” is exactly what I don’t want to achieve in my writing here. That’s not to say that those travel blogs are useless, in fact, I know from first-hand experience the absolute wealth of knowledge they contain. I’ve read a tonne of them leading up to this big trip my fiancé and I about to set-out on, and found many, if not most of them to be highly informative and inspiring. But they already exist. You’d be hard pressed to find any town or city with even an inkling of tourism funding that doesn’t have some sort of list of fun activities or sights to see somewhere online – “13 Awesome Things to do in Penrith”.

Instead, I’m just trying to kill a number of birds with one stone here. Five in fact!

  1. I want to keep my family and friends updated with where we’ve been, what we’ve seen and where we’re thinking of heading.
  2. I want to keep a journal of my thoughts, and how extended travel could potentially be changing the way I see the world.
  3. I want a recount of this trip with a few photos and stories that I can look back on one day, when my memory of the places we’ve visited becomes hazy and unclear.
  4. I want a long term project to work on. I’ve been saying for years that I’d like to journal, or even just write more, and it looks like I’ll finally have an abundance of free time on my hands.
  5. I want to free my thoughts from my constantly over analysing brain and spew them onto paper, to help me relax and really take my time with this trip.

I know what you’re thinking. Chill out Hughie, you’re going on holidays man, relax! But this trip has been such an insanely long time coming that I’m really feeling the pressure of making the most of it. Writing all of this stuff down and publishing it on a website seems like the most efficient way of achieving the brutal deaths of these five feathered theropods. I’ll obviously keep the super personal stuff out of it, my mother-in-law probably doesn’t want to hear about my bowel movements, but on the other hand, my mates would probably have a laugh if I ever end up spewing from both ends…alright, it’ll be pretty personal.

In saying all of this, I want to avoid this becoming something I don’t want to do. I like writing, recounting and reminiscing. As soon as this feels like it’s a job I have to do to keep my mother and mother-in-law happy, I’m probably going to give it a rest.

So, to my mums, don’t expect daily, weekly, fortnightly or even monthly updates here. It will all get written when it gets written, and when I’m satisfied all five avian creatures have met their demise, I’ll publish it.

You’ll hear from me eventually,
Hughie.
